In the early 1930s, Rene Ramillion began manufacturing mountain equipment in Monestier de Clermont, a French Alpine village. An abbreviation of the town's name, Moncler, originally forged a name for itself by crafting durable mountain equipment, including tent frames and ski poles. In 1952, with a corporate capital of 8 million francs, Rene Ramillion partnered up with Andre Vincent, and in 1968 the company gained worldwide recognition after outfitting the French team for the Winter Olympics in Grenoble. In the 1980s, Moncler received a face-lift, becoming a status symbol essential of Italy's Paninaro subculture when Chantal Thomas brought fur trim, satin and reversible fabrics to the company's range. In 2003, Remo Ruffini took over the reigns as the label's creative director, spearheading projects such as Gamme Bleu, a cobranding venture between Moncler and Thom Browne. Ruffini is also responsible for re-interpreting the classic quilted jacket, turning out fashionable variations on the original each season, including the Anderson parka and Vanoise jacket. With 220 grams of down in each men's jacket, and Ruffini at the helm of its innovative design team, Moncler has positioned itself as a world leader in cold-weather outerwear that successfully blends warmth, function and style. Moncler now primarily makes down-filled jackets and outerwear, skiwear, and lighter-weight outerwear for spring, although each collection includes a few additional pieces such as sweaters, polo shirts and swim trunks.
